Labour is different for every woman and every birth. Our role is to provide calm, supportive, and skilled care while helping you feel informed and confident throughout the experience.
When Labour Starts
We discuss the signs of labour during your pregnancy and explain when to contact us. You can call whenever you're unsure or have concerns. We are available for urgent concerns or labour cares 24/7.
During Labour
We provide continuous support throughout labour and birth by:

Supporting your birth preferences wherever safely possible.

Helping you make informed decisions if circumstances change.
Pain Relief Options
Every labour is different, and every woman experiences pain differently. We wil discuss the range of available comfort measures and pain relief options during pregnancy and support whichever option is right for you.
Each midwife at Tararua Midwives provide a range of pain relief options. These include both holistic and medicalised approches depending on your preferences at the time.
Holistic options: aromatherapy, sterile water injections, tens machine hire, hydrotherapy/water births, free movements
Medicalised options: use of opiates in labour (morphine or fentanyl), epidural cares.
Birth
Our priority is providing safe, respectful care while supporting your choices.
If your labour requires additional medical support, we'll work closely with the hospital team and obstetric specialists to ensure you receive the care you need.
After Your Baby is Born
Following birth we'll:

Assess you and your baby.

Support skin-to-skin contact.

Help establish feeding.

Complete newborn checks.
-
Ensure you and your baby are recovering well before returning home or transferring to the postnatal ward.
